Wander Women Iowa & Intertwined Iowa Present.png

REGISTRATION CLOSED. We want to maintain a somewhat intimate setting for the book club, therefore we have chosen to close registration for the November book club. Thank you for understanding. Registration for the December book club will open on October 15.

We love books and reading almost as much as we love being outside, so we decided to combine our two loves and start a book club. For this endeavor we are partnering with Intertwined Iowa to bring you a free monthly book club focusing on books inspired by nature and written exclusively by women, people of color, and gender non-conforming individuals. We were inspired to start this type of book club after reading this article.

Book Club will be held the second Tuesday of every month from 6:30-8:30 starting on November 12. We will be holding our meetings at the Iowa Food Co-op, who has generously donated their space to us. Light snacks and hot tea will be provided.

Book Club Dates:

  • Tuesday, November 12- Registration open now

  • Tuesday, December 10 - Registration will open in mid-October

  • Tuesday, January 14 - Registration will open in mid-November

  • Tuesday, February 11 - Registration will open in mid- December

Our first selection is “Crazy Brave: A Memoir by Joy Harjo. Joy Harjo is the current U.S. Poet Laureate, a member of the Mvskoke Nation, an author, playwright, and musician. She is the first Native American Poet Laureate in the history of the position.

“In this transcendent memoir, grounded in tribal myth and ancestry, music and poetry, Joy Harjo details her journey to becoming a poet. Born in Oklahoma, the end place of the Trail of Tears, Harjo grew up learning to dodge an abusive stepfather by finding shelter in her imagination, a deep spiritual life, and connection with the natural world. Narrating the complexities of betrayal and love, Crazy Brave is a haunting, visionary memoir about family and the breaking apart necessary in finding a voice.”

Please consider checking the book out from your local library or purchasing from a locally owned bookstore. It is available as an e-book and in print from the Des Moines Public Library.

Registration for the November book club is closed. The form below is for being put on a cancellation list, and we will contact you immediately shall a spot become open for you.
