About Chichaqua Bottoms

Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt stretches for almost ten miles along the Skunk River in northeast Polk County.

The area's natural features include old oxbow river channels and backwaters, marshes, and wetlands. Chichaqua also includes sandy upland hills with reconstructed prairies and native prairie remnants.

About this trip

This all-inclusive camping trip is for girls ages 9-11 and their caregivers. The activities and conversation we’ll be engaging in will encourage bonding and trust, all while having lots of fun! You will also learn basic camping skills so that you can plan your own camping trip in the future! Our trips are very hands-on so you will be able to get firsthand in experience in these skills. This trip is for girls ages 9-11. For girls younger than 11, please check out this trip.

Trip Itinerary

Saturday

  • Depart Des Moines at 12:30 pm

  • Arrive and set-up camp

  • Get to know one another over snacks and some fun games

  • Head out on a hike (2.6 miles) to explore all of the amazing spots within the park

  • Make and take camp craft so that you can commemorate your trip

  • Indulge in a delicious dinner, complete with dessert.

  • Fire circle

  • Relax! Enjoy some snacks (gourmet s’mores!), drinks, and conversations around the campfire. Then crawl into your cozy tent for some well-deserved rest.

Sunday

  • Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea and juice around the fire while we cook a healthy and filling breakfast for you to enjoy.

  • Break down camp and learn about planning your own camping trip, complete with a take home packing list and how-to guide

  • Canoe 3 miles of the Old Skunk River oxbows

$195 per pair (this trip is limited to 5 pairs)
